“How thick is the sheet metal used to manufacture the profile?” is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive. When we answer “1 mm”, the reaction is almost always the same: “ Is that all? Isn’t that too thin? The correct answer is not a number. It is this: thickness only makes sense in relation to the structural design, which calculates and verifies the strength of the structure. A light steel structure should never be built without this calculation — regardless of the manufacturer.
In short: the sheet thickness alone does not determine the strength of a light steel structure. Strength results from the combination of the steel’s thickness and properties, the profile’s shape and stiffeners, the arrangement and connections of the elements, and, crucially, the structural calculation (technical design) that verifies whether the selected profiles can withstand the actual loads.
A fair comparison between two structures cannot be made based solely on the thickness of the galvanized sheet. What matters is the combination of:
Cold-formed steel profiles are shaped from steel sheet into a C-shaped geometry with stiffeners, which significantly changes their behavior compared to a flat sheet of the same thickness.
But the strength of a steel house does not come from the shape of a single profile alone. It results from the entire structural system: the geometry of the profiles, the number of elements, how they are arranged and connected, and how they work together to carry and distribute loads.
In short, it is not a single profile that supports the house, but an entire assembly of elements working together.
A steel structure is not designed according to the principle that “thicker means safer.” The structural solution must be established through the technical design and structural calculation, carried out by specialized engineers based on the specific characteristics of the building and its location.
The technical design verifies whether the profiles and structural configuration can withstand the loads relevant to the project: self-weight, snow, wind, seismic actions, and other applicable loads.
At Unic Rotarex®, we manufacture our standard profiles from 1 mm galvanized steel. Depending on the results of the structural calculation, these may be sufficient for the specific project. In cases where the design requires profiles with different characteristics or dimensions, we purchase them from third parties and integrate them into the structural solution.
Therefore, it is not thickness that determines whether a structure is safe; the structural calculation confirms whether the profile used is suitable for the specific project.
Not every time a supplier proposes thicker profiles or larger sections does it mean that they are necessary for the structural safety of the building. There can be several reasons: the specific requirements of the project, the design approach chosen by the manufacturer, the range of profiles available, or the technological capabilities of the production line.
A thicker profile generally means more material and, consequently, a higher cost. If that additional amount of material is not justified by the structural requirements of the project, it can increase the cost of the structure without providing a necessary structural benefit.
This does not mean that a solution using thicker profiles is wrong. In certain projects, they may be necessary. What matters is that the thickness is justified by the technical solution and the structural calculation, rather than being used as a simple argument that “more means safer”.
When comparing two quotes, don’t compare just the profile thickness. Compare the structural solution and the cost it involves.
In a light steel structure, strength does not come down to a single number. The profile, its geometry, the number and arrangement of elements, the connections, and the way the entire structure is designed all work together. That is why, when comparing two quotes, don’t look only at the sheet thickness. Look at the complete solution.
